Happy Heart!

Happy Heart Month!

It’s the month of chocolates, Valentine hearts, and overpriced roses, and as the stores start filling up with reds and pinks, you might be thinking of how you are going to shower your loved one(s) with love. Should it be chocolates? Should it be something shiny and sparkly?

These are the questions men and women alike will be asking leading up to Valentine’s Day. The word “love” may have many meanings, but when I think of love, I think of the deep connection that exists when you love someone. The strong bond you have with your parents, your best friend, your children, and last but not least, the connection with yourself.

Roses are red, violets are blue, look in the mirror, and say I love YOU!

How often do you take the time to connect with yourself? Be honest, as the answer is usually not enough. Do you go through your day mindlessly, or mindfully?   In Pilates, we place a strong emphasis on the mind/body connection throughout the session or class. This is why the Pilates method can be so transformative, not only physically but mentally as well. Have you ever been guilty of “checking out” during an exercise – making a mental list of groceries you need to buy, canceling that spa appointment, or thinking about your Friday night plans? (I’ll be honest, I have!) Here are a few simple ways to stay connected with yourself:

  • Focus on the five senses during one of your daily activities. For example, while you are eating breakfast, ask yourself: how does it taste? Is it sweet, or salty? What is the texture? What colors do you see, and do they remind you of anything? What does it smell like? What sounds do you hear?

  • Create an “I am _______ insert adjective here” statement, and repeat it often.

  • Choose to be present. This is sometimes difficult, but during that one hour, or 10 minutes that you take for yourself, be truly present in the moment.

  • Treat yourself to a Valentine’s gift this year! Don’t wait for the roses to arrive, buy them yourself :)

What does connection mean to you? My enquiring mind wants to know!
