Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pilates?

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness
— Joseph Pilates, “Return to Life”

Pilates is a movement system that was developed almost a century ago by Joseph Pilates. Originally called "Contrology", Pilates aims to develop the mind, body and spirit in a balanced way.

Matwork uses your own body weight as resistance, while specialized equipment such as the Reformer and Trapeze Table use springs, rather than weights, as resistance. Spring tension allows for tension throughout a joint’s full range of motion - as the spring opens, tension gradually increases.

Built on the principles of Breathing, Concentration, Control, Centering, Precision and Rhythm/Flow, benefits of a regular Pilates practice include:

  • Increased body awareness

  • Improved posture/alignment

  • Injury prevention

  • increased strength and flexibility

What is the Gyrotonic® method?

About the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® methods

The ultimate aim is to be at home in one’s body, to be at one with the nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience
— Juliu Horvath

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods are complementary exercise methods that fall under one umbrella- the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.

Juliu Horvath, a former professional dancer, developed a program named “Yoga for Dancers” in the 1980’s after spending time in St. Thomas. The program later laid the foundations for the Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic Methods. Influenced by the principles of dance, yoga, tai chi and swimming, Gyrotonic movements are three-dimensional and train the body as a whole.

Gyrotonic exercises are done on custom-designed Gyrotonic equipment, whereas Gyrokinesis exercises are done on a mat and chair. Spiraling and circular movements with corresponding breath patterns help increase circulation and joint mobility while opening and strengthening the body.

Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities, and its many benefits include:

  • Enhanced joint mobility and articulation

  • Strengthening of nervous and lymphatic systems

  • Increased circulation and more energy
